Tamagawa Bridge

Tamagawa Bridge on the Hachiko Line in western Tokyo is the site of two rail crashes and the discovery of a new species of whale.

The Akishima whale, later known as Eschrichtius akishimaensis, was a fossilised whale discovered in 1961 right next to the bridge.

In 1945, a head-on collision at the bridge resulted in 105 fatalities. There is a monument to the accident on the riverbank nearby.

In July 1947, a US military aircraft crashed into a train travelling over the bridge killing four people.
