Construction of this section of line started in the 1930s, was paused during WW2, and then never started again. Despite several attempts to raise money to continue the construction and a possibility of using the line as part of the Seikan Tunnel route linking the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido, the project was officially abandoned in the late 1960s. This viaduct remains, looking amazing in the summer sun.
